FAQs
What is executive function?
Executive function refers to a set of cognitive processes that help you manage your thoughts, emotions, and actions to pursue goals and respond effectively to new or complex situations. These processes act like your brain’s control system, supporting planning, problem-solving, focus, adaptability, and impulse regulation.
Key aspects of executive function
Working memory – holding and using information in mind while completing tasks.
Inhibitory control / self-regulation – managing impulses and distractions to guide behavior effectively.
Cognitive flexibility – shifting thinking or approaches when circumstances or priorities change.
Executive function can be influenced by neurodivergence, mental health, cognition, as well as biological and environmental aspects, meaning that some people find these processes easier or harder to use. Some elements of executive function can be supported by improved sleep, nutrition, or physical activity but many elements may be difficult or impossible to address.
How can consulting help my executive function?
Executive function consulting focuses on helping you work effectively with how your brain naturally functions. It does not change underlying cognitive processes—it doesn’t make your working memory, self-control, or planning abilities suddenly stronger—but it can help you find external supports, strategies, and systems that make tasks more manageable.
People with executive function challenges often struggle when they try to complete tasks the same way as others. Expecting yourself to function in the same way as everyone else is stressful and unlikely to succeed. Criticizing yourself or feeling guilty about differences in how you think or organize does not improve results. Therefore, redefining expectations and finding new approaches to work WITH instead of AGAINST your brain will be more helpful, empowering, and encouraging.
The goal is to work with your natural cognitive profile to increase efficiency, reduce undue pressure, and help you accomplish tasks more effectively.
What is body doubling?
Body doubling is a coaching technique that helps increase focus, motivation, and accountability by working in the presence of another person. The body double may or may not need to assist, their presence alone can make it easier to start tasks and maintain attention. This approach supports people who struggle with task initiation or focus by creating an environment that encourages follow-through, using strategies like working alongside a friend, joining a virtual work session, or having a coach or accountability partner check in periodically.
